Write alone. Edit together.

TomeWriter is a desktop app for fiction and scripts. You write offline, on your own machine. When you are ready, you sync to a server your group runs, and the others read, comment, and edit from there.

TomeWriter's main window: the Binder on the left, a prose scene in the editor, the inspector on the right.

What it does

Scenes and structure

Scenes live in an Inbox until you place them, so you can write first and organise later. When you want structure, it grows from books to parts, chapters, and scenes, and you can see it as a Binder, Corkboard, Outliner, or Timeline.

The Corkboard view: a chapter heading with its scene cards, each showing status and synopsis.

Comments and roles

Comment on a passage or on a whole scene; comments are stored apart from the text, so the prose stays untouched. Each person gets a role of owner, editor, contributor, commenter, or reader, and a scene can be locked or assigned.

The inspector's comments panel: two inline comments quoting the passages they refer to.

Scripts and prose

Write prose scenes, planning scenes, and script scenes in one work. Screenplay and stage play scenes have guided typing, and they travel as Fountain inside a TomeDir folder.

A screenplay scene in the editor: character cues and dialogue laid out as you type.

How a group uses it

  1. Write offline. Everything works with no network, on your own machine.
  2. Sync when you choose. One button sends your work to your group's server, and it never happens behind your back.
  3. Read, comment, edit. Read in the browser or in the app. Comment and edit in the app. Every sync is kept as a version your group can compare.

Your group, your server

The server is one Docker container, and your data stays with you. It handles roles and invitations, keeps a version history, and offers a read-only web reader. When you want outside readers, you can publish a work to an unlisted web address.

TomeReader Coming soon

TomeReader is the other half: a desktop reader for serialized fiction. It fetches new chapters from the sites you choose, such as Archive of Our Own, Royal Road, Project Gutenberg, Substack, and many more through per-site plugins, and brings them to one place. Tag works, mark them for later, track what you have read, and follow works and authors. Saved searches tell you when there is something new without searching again.
